Clear the air

Here’s a very quick and easy one to start off with, but I’ve included it because it’s also very effective!… Just open your windows! Try to open up more than one so that you can get a flow of fresh air going through your home.

So long as you don’t live somewhere where it’s smelly outside, this should help to get things feeling and smelling fresher in no time – easy!

Buy eco friendly cleaning products

Fortunately there are quite a few good eco friendly cleaning products on the market now, and the selection seems to be growing pretty rapidly.

But if you want an eco friendly cleaner that also makes your home smell amazing, then I recommend trying out the ‘method’ range.

Their products not only make your home smell wonderful, but you can keep a clear conscience knowing that they off-set their carbon emissions, use renewable energy and materials, and never test on animals.

My hands-down favorites for delicious scents are the pink grapefruit and french lavender all purpose cleaning sprays… yum!

Make your own natural cleaning products

If you want to go one step further, try making some delicious smelling all-natural cleaning products.

There are lots of options to choose from, from the simple one scent cleaners, through to exotic unique blends.

If you’re new to making your own natural eco friendly cleaning products, why not start with something really simple that smells amazing…

For a great all purpose cleaner, just fill a spray bottle with around two cups of water and one cup of eco friendly dishwashing liquid, then add 10 – 20 drops of your favorite essential oil (lavender is perfect for all round the house).

Remember to check out the safety guidelines for the oils you’re thinking of using – for example some essential oils aren’t recommended during pregnancy or for children or pets.

Play around with the amount you add to see how strong you like the scent, which might vary depending on which essential oil you’re using.

If you really want the scent to linger, it’s generally best to go for around 20 drops.

Have a play around with some different essential oils, and always be sure to go for good quality oils. You can find oils for sale that seem like a real bargain, but really don’t smell too good at all – unfortunately I know this from personal experience!

You can find a nice selection of different good quality oils over in the Smell Shop!

Also remember that if you’ve got any nasty niffs that you need to get rid of, good old baking soda is your best friend.

It’s great for refreshing carpets (just sprinkle it on, leave for a couple of hours then vacuum), and placing a cup in the fridge will banish any pong in there.

Get an eco friendly air freshner spray

If you want to get your hands on a gorgeous smelling eco friendly air freshner spray, I recommend trying the Asutra range.

These all natural eco friendly sprays can be used to add a gorgeous fragrance to your rooms, linens, and even your face and body! Oh, and they’re endorsed by Venus Williams.

Predictably, I love the lavender scented spray, but there are six different yummy scents to choose from to keep your home smelling great.

Or make your own eco friendly air freshner spray!

Again, you can go one step further and whip up your own natural air freshner as a great eco friendly way to make your home smell good.

All you need to do is add one tablespoon of which hazel and around 30 drops of essential oil to a spray bottle with a third to half a cup of distilled water.

Give it a good shake, then enjoy a gorgeously scented home!

Diffuse essential oils

As you might have noticed if you’ve read some of my previous posts, I think that diffusing essential oils in your home the easiest and best way to make it smell absolutely AMAZING… and it’s eco friendly too!

The diffuser I often recommend is this one, because it works well, looks good, and is great value.

Just add your favorite essential oil or a nice blend of oils. I’ve suggested some particularly delicious blends in my post on how to make your home smell like a spa!

A great simple blend to get started with is a couple of drops of lavender and a couple of peppermint – start with those quantities, then add more if you like a stronger scent. Simple!

Remember to check out the safety guidelines for the oils you’re thinking of using – for example some essential oils aren’t recommended during pregnancy or for children or pets.

Get an eco friendly soy scented candle

Aira soy candles use all natural ingredients and pure essential oil blends… and by all accounts they smell absolutely amazing!

Soy burns cleaner and longer than paraffin based scented candles, but still produces lovely scented candles to make your home smell great.

These ones come in an amazing choice of 28 essential oil blends including comforting banana nut bread and relaxing lavender and bergamot blends.

These make a perfect eco friendly choice if you’re a lover of scented candles, or as a lovely gift if you know someone else who is!

Use charcoal bags and lavender bags

A good eco friendly way to absorb nasty whiffs and freshen your space is to use some natural charcoal bags.

These do a fantastic job at absorbing unpleasant smells in small spaces – like your wardrobe, drawers, bathroom and areas around pet litter boxes.

They last up to two years and are 100% natural – what’s not to love!

And once you’ve banished any nasty smells you can then add a lovely scent with some natural lavender bags.

They might be a bit old fashioned, but they’re still around for a reason – because they work really well and make the area around them smell gorgeous!

Pot Pourri

Using pot pourri as an eco friendly way to make your home smell good

Another old fashioned tip that’s making a comeback – pot pourri!

Some of the varieties that are around now look much more interesting and stylish than the old ‘mulsh’ type that you might be thinking of.

Plus, now a lot of them smell fantastic and are a great way to make your home smell lovely in an eco friendly way!

If you want something that looks really pretty, try the Mana range of pot pourris. They come in several scents, I think the citrus and lavender varieties look particularly gorgeous.

If you’re feeling crafty you could also learn how to make your own pot pourri wreath!

Make your own reed diffuser

You can buy some amazing smelling reed diffusers for your home, but did you know that you can make your own natural essential oil reed diffuser using eco friendly materials?

It’s pretty simple too, here’s a good tutorial if you want to give it a go.

You can find a good selection of essential oils over in the Smell Shop!

Essential oil cotton balls

Another simple eco friendly idea to make your home smell good is to simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to cotton balls and place them strategically around your home.

This is a really simple idea to give a nice subtle scent in the area immediately around where they’re placed.

Just remember to keep them well out of reach of children and pets!

Hang a shower bouquet

Try hanging a bunch of lavender and rosemary in a corner of your shower where it won’t get wet.

Once the shower gets steamy, they’re produce a lovely subtle spa-like scent!

You can also try this method with eucalyptus, but there is some controversy around whether growing the eucalyptus plant is environmentally friendly and sustainable.

It seems to depend on where and how it’s grown, so you might want to do some research before trying it.

Use air purifying plants

And finally, try using some pretty air purifying plants to help detoxify the air in your home!

Not only can these help to keep your home smelling sweet, they can also be an easy way to add interest to your interior decor!

Some of the best air purifying plants to try in your home are:

  • English ivy
  • Chrysanthemum
  • Spider plant
  • Chinese evergreen
  • Aloe vera

For safety reasons, always remember to keep your house plants away from any pets or children who could decide to chew on them!

Using air purifying plants in your home

I hope you’ve enjoyed these lovely eco friendly ways to make your home smell good! We all know how important it is to do our bit to help the environment – you’ve got to start somewhere, and making your home a bit more lovely using only eco friendly products is as good a place as any!
