Who doesn’t want their home to smell like a gorgeously luxurious hotel?
You know that feeling when you walk into a beautiful hotel and immediately you’re enveloped in the ‘scentsory’ equivalent of a warm fluffy towel?
Well, it’s totally possible to recreate that feeling at home by making your home smell just like a luxury hotel!
Fancy hotels often diffuse luxury scents through their lobbies and communal areas, then provide scent sprays with the same fragrance for their staff to spritz in the guest’s rooms.
This means that the gorgeous scent is consistent throughout the whole hotel, and guests tend to remember it and associate it with the hotel.
Assuming that you had a great experience during your stay, the special smell adds to the whole experience and you associate it with that sense of luxury afterwards.
Hotels use this to improve the whole ‘customer experience’ and it’s been shown to increase loyalty and brand awareness.
So how do you make your home smell like a hotel to create the same luxurious feeling there?
Well, it’s pretty easy really!
You just have to find the right scent and use it consistently so that it ‘layers’ throughout your home.
What kind of scent should you go for?
For this to work, the scent has to be something quite light and fresh.
If you start to layer rich heady fragrances the effect can be overpowering – which isn’t what we’re aiming for here!
To really achieve the right effect when you set out to make your home smell like a hotel, you need to get hold of a fragrance that’s on the citrusy side, sometimes with just a touch of floral notes too.
Although you can of course buy products that fit the bill (I’ll get to that in a moment!) it’s also possible to achieve the effect with some nifty homemade concoctions!
Homemade(ish!) solutions to make your home smell like a hotel
Hotels often use industrial diffusers and luxurious oils to infuse communal areas with scent, and you can simply scale this down to do the same thing in your own home.

First you’ll need to get hold of a diffuser.
You can use a reed diffuser (I’ll show you some of those in a mo), or you can use an electric aromatherapy diffuser, which happens to be my preferred option!
I love these because not only do they make your home smell great, they’re also amazing for relieving congestion if you’ve got a cold. Plus, they put moisture into the air which is great if you suffer from dry skin.
Look for something like this one and you can’t go too far wrong.
Next up, you’ll need some amazing smelling oil to go in your aromatherapy diffuser.
Several London boutique hotels use the classic Jo Malone Lime, Basil & Mandarin fragrance throughout their buildings, and it’s a really good example of the best kind of scent to go for.
To get the same effect at a fraction of the price, you can experiment with blends of similar oils, or try a combination of peppermint, orange, grapefruit and lavender oil (try 1 drop of each to begin with) for an equally gorgeous and energizing blend.
(I also recommend this dreamy blend in my post on how to make your home smell like Spring!)
Remember to check out the safety guidelines for the oils you’re thinking of using – for example some essential oils aren’t recommended during pregnancy or for children or pets.
This post has some nice ideas if you fancy experimenting with different combinations to find your ideal hotel scent!
Then once you’ve found your perfect ‘signature blend’, simply grab yourself an empty mini spray bottle (or plant mister spray), and mix your oils into water to spray around the rooms in your house.
To do this properly, you just add up to 20 drops of oil in total and top up with distilled water (or you can use tap water, but the spray won’t last as long) and one teaspoon of salt to help it mix well.
If you find it tricky to get it all in the bottle you can try using a mini funnel to help.
And if you prefer to completely avoid the hassle of mixing up your own oil blend, try something like this addictively floral citrusy Aesop Anouk blend. Apparently that’s what they use at The Rose Hotel in Venice, California for an amazing aroma.
Remember, for a true ‘hotel experience’, your diffuser should be in the entrance area of your home so that the fragrance is strongest there, then subtly spread through the rest of your home!
Best buys for a hotel-worthy aroma
If blending essential oils and sprays all seems like a bit of a faff to you, worry not. There are some amazing fragrance products that you can buy that will get your home smelling like a hotel in no time!
If you’d like to go for a ‘set it and forget it’ option, then choose a reed diffuser rather than an electronic aromatherapy diffuser.
The advantage of these is that you can always just buy a couple (or more!) and place them in different spots in your home to get a consistent fragrance. That way you don’t have to worry about scenting your other rooms with spray.
That said, lots of companies who make reed diffusers also do matching room sprays so you can use them for a little boost, or you can choose something that compliments the scent in your reed diffuser.
So which are the best reed diffusers to choose for a classic ‘hotel scent’?
I’ve come up with a couple of lovely reed diffusers in different price brackets for you to check out. I would recommend staying away from really cheap reed diffusers. More often than not they give off quite a synthetic smell and run out really quickly.
The first reed diffuser I’d recommend is the LOVSPA Sparkling Citrus diffuser. It smells bright, light and energising, while still having a slightly luxurious feel to it.
It also lasts well (just remember to turn the reeds over every so often) and looks pretty.
If you fancy giving one of these a whirl to make your home smell like a hotel, it’ll cost you $24.50 on Amazon. Not bad value for a long lasting hotel style scent!
The next option I have for you is pricier, but lasts for months and by all accounts smells a-m-a-z-i-n-g.
This is the Archipelago Home Fragrance Diffuser in Mango Tangerine – which you can also buy in the Ritz-Carlton hotel shop.
This scent is really bright and fruity, but still has fresh citrusy notes to keep things feeling light and luxurious.
Since this lasts for so long, the $45 price tag is still actually pretty good value. It’s a good investment if you’re serious about making your house smell divine!
So there we have it guys, that’s how to make your home smell like a hotel!
I hope you have fun trying out these amazing smelling solutions so that you can feel a little bit like you’re stepping into luxury every time you walk through your own front door – enjoy!
