Spring Cleaning

Technically there’s no reason you can’t make your home smell gorgeously spring-like without cleaning up first – but it’s a shame not to incorporate a spot of traditional spring cleaning into your plans!
Clean spaces will automatically smell fresher, and clearing the clutter can give you a huge psychological boost.
Even if you’re not up for a full spring de-clutter, you can find ways to make your home smell like spring by introducing a bit of a spring cleaning vibe!…
Clean your air!
The first step to making your home smell like spring is a nice simple one – just open your windows!
Getting the air flowing through your home with a gentle spring breeze will start to flush out any stale aromas and introduce a much fresher feel.
If you live in a polluted area or you have allergies, you could always consider investing in an air purifier (this one gets amazing reviews) to get a similar effect.
To cleanse the air naturally, introduce some house plants into your home.

These have been shown to help get rid of toxins in the air, and you can kill two birds with one stone by choosing plants with gorgeous spring fragrances.
If you want something super low maintenance, try a rubber plant – they only need watering about once a week. Or you could go for an aloe vera plant, which you only need to remember to water every couple of weeks or so – easy!
If you want to read up on which plants are particularly good for cleaning the air, check out this article.
And if you’re after something with a gorgeous scent, try a Jasminium Polyanthum, a scented Geranium, or a citrus plant.
Remember – some houseplants are toxic to pets (and people), so do your research and take care!
Clean your surfaces with a spring scent

Continuing with the spring cleaning vibe, you can make your home smell like spring as you get on with the cleaning!
‘The Crazy Craft Lady’ has a gorgeous recipe for a homemade spring scented cleaning solution, which uses lemon and peppermint essential oils and smells amazing.
All you need to do is combine the following in a glass spray bottle, and remember to give it a good shake before you use it:
- 3/4 cup distilled water
- 3/4 cup white vinegar
- 15 drops lemon essential oil
- 15 drops peppermint essential oil
Delish!
If you’re lacking the time or energy to create your own spring-smelling concoction, just grab yourself some Method Pink Grapefruit Surface Cleaner (which smells yummy) and get scrubbing!
Spring Linen Spritz
The final step I suggest to make your home smell like spring, before we move on to actually scenting the air, is to get busy with some fresh scented linen spray.
Doing this will make your rooms smell delicious, and extend the freshly washed feel of your sheets much longer!
And it feels so luxurious when you snuggled down into those freshly scented sheets at bedtime… mmmm…

Once again, you can either make your own or buy something lovely.
If you’re going for the latter option, the linen spray I recommend is by Scentennials, because they do a great range of fragrances like this Green Tea & Lemon one.
If you want to have a go at making your own spring scented linen spray, you just need to mix up 2 tablespoons of vodka, 2 cups of distilled water, and 15-20 drops of lavender oil in a spray bottle.
Give it a good shake up before you use it.
If you want to make your homemade linen spray extra fancy, you can throw in a couple of sprigs of dried lavender to make it pretty.
And for a little spring-twist, experiment with adding some peppermint oil or lemon oil to the mix.
Scent your air to make your home smell like spring!

Now that we have all the spring cleaning out of the way, we can move on to finding more ways to make your home smell like spring by scenting the air!
The easiest way to do this is to simply buy a couple of reed diffusers with a gorgeous spring scent.
The two diffusers I recommend to really get your home smelling spring-like are the ones I’ve mentioned before in ‘How to make your home smell like a hotel’.
The first is the LOVSPA Sparkling Citrus diffuser, which as the name suggests has a lovely sprarkling citrus aroma – perfect for spring.
The second is the Archipelago Home Fragrance Diffuser in Mango Tangerine, which is pricier but should last for a really long time.
Both are Gorgeous with a capital G and will definitely get spring blooming inside your home.
If you fancy being more creative and mixing your own spring aromas then you can try my favorite method of scenting your home, which is to create unique blends of essential oils (or you can just use one or two), and diffuse them through your home using an electronic aromatherapy diffuser.
As I’ve mentioned before, I love these things because they’re great for adding moisture to the air and for clearing congestion if you suffer from colds or allergies.
Mine has been a god-send whenever my little one (too young to take decongestants) has been suffering with a bad cold, and when I’ve been pregnant and not able to take cold remedies.
Anyway, aromatherapy diffusers are also amazing for spreading gorgeous scents around your home!
I often recommend this one, simply because it has such a huge amount of top reviews on Amazon (over 11,000!) and I think it looks pretty cool.
For a super fresh blend to make your home smell like spring, try mixing a couple of drops of peppermint, orange, grapefruit and lavender essential oils into the diffuser water. Mmmm, mmmmm!

Then you can take it from there and experiment to create your own signature spring blend.
Remember to check out the safety guidelines for the oils you’re thinking of using – for example some essential oils aren’t recommended during pregnancy or for children or pets.
Spring stove simmer to make your home smell like Spring!
If you’re after a creative way to get your home smelling spring like, why not try a spring themed stove simmer?
A stove simmer is simply a big pan of water with a load of delicious smelling ingredients in it, that you leave simmering on the stove (and top it up with water as it boils down), and it creates the most amazing aroma to scent your home.
I like to add slices of lime, some fresh mint, and rosemary to make a gorgeously fresh scented stove simmer to give my whole home a spring scent.
You can experiment by just chucking in whatever ingredients you fancy though!
Just don’t forget to keep a close eye on your pot, and never leave it unattended for long or around children!
If you need some inspiration, check out these spring themed ideas on Gathering Dreams – I’m definitely going to be trying out the lemon, cinamon, mint and thyme recipie.

Crafty options to make your home smell like Spring
And finally, if you’re after something a bit crafty to bring the scent of spring to your home, why not try one of these gorgeous projects…
The first is a gorgeous herbal wreath, and the second are some beautiful scented paper flowers.

I found them both on Martha Stewart’s website – just follow the links for the instructions.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is that!
